Changing the channel

SBS news anchor and founding board member, Mary Kostakidis, is reportedly suing SBS for breach of contract after long standing disagreements with management about the future and direction of the public broadcaster.

The walkout by the ‘face of SBS’ has shed some public light on what SBS staff say is a significant and worrying shift in the culture of the multicultural broadcaster.

What do you think?
Have you noticed changes at SBS? Have your say below.

Good on Mary for standing up for what she believes in. In the last few months, I HAVE noticed the increase in American shows on SBS and a decrease in the cultural diversity of the station and I think it's a shame that management are pushing the network down that path.

Go, Mary! I absolutely agree - the new format is lumbering, disjointed and full of "infotainment" not real news. The "banter" between hosts is uncomfortable and pointless. Why can't we have a sharp, intelligent news program on SBS? Please stop trying to copy the commercial/cable "news" shows.

I agree SBS news has changed for the worse. As a result we are now tending to watch ABC from 6.30pm whereas before we watched both SBS aand ABC news. Mary does appear to have been sidelined by Stan.

I hate the ads in the news, and I don't like the hour long format either. I always go to ABC at 7. And the dumb little asides from the alternate presenter at the end of one item as a bridge to the next is really poor presentation.

I totally agree with Kostakidis. We were avid watchers of SBS news because it gave the world news in a concise but detailed format, without all the fillers and ad breaks of commercial news broadcasters. We liked the separate sports bulletin too (my partners not into sports). Now SBS news is just like all the other broadcasters. We've switched to watching the half-hour ABC news bulletin instead.

I like to see my tax supprots quality services such as SBS and ABC; not to distroy them in a sneaky way.

yes, I agree with Mary, SBS news have become less intersting and full of commercial rabish, but the quality of the others programs have become worse also.

In complete agreement with all that's been said. The 1 hour format is unnecessary. News should be to the point and 30 minutes is enough to do it. One anchor is plenty, Ms Kostakidis has always done her job perfectly, I don't know why Stan is there. I have nothing against Stan but surely there must be another vehicle for him to present. SBS has compromised its standards. The quality isn't there anymore. I don't watch much television, the fact that SBS is modelling itself on the commercial station means I will watch even less.
